Earthquakes reported felt:

#1: 4.5 quake: 5 Km SSE of Alexandria, Jamaica, 26 Aug 2020 12h28110 reports

A magnitude 4.5 quake occurred in the center of Jamaica this morning at 7:28 am local time. Its epicenter was approx. 5 km SSE of Alexandria and its depth at estimated 10 km.

The quake was widely felt as light to moderate shaking over a large part of the island. A user from Mandeville 50 km (35 mi) to the SW reported a “large rumbling sound and (that the) bed and house shook“.

There are no reports of damages, nor should this quake have been strong enough to cause significant damage.

Jamaica has only few quakes normally, much in contrast to the nearby islands to the east of it comprising Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. The reason is that Jamaica is farther away from the active tectonic boundary between the Caribbean and North American plates that runs close to the latter island.

The last significant quake felt on Jamaica before was a similar tremor at the NE coast on 14 June this year.
