Earthquakes reported felt:

#1: 6.0 quake: 12 Km Al Suroeste De Jaco, Garabito. (Costa Rica), 24 Aug 2020 21h51164 reports

A moderately strong earthquake hit 24 km beneath Costa Rica’s Pacific coast at 3:50 pm local time yesterday afternoon. The epicenter was located approx. 12 km SW of Jaco town, Garabito, Puntarenas.

At magnitude 6, it was a strong quake, but fortunately, no significant damage was reported except objects falling from supermarket shelves etc. Its depth and distance from the coast prevented significant damage to occur, although in the immediate coastal areas, shaking was perceived as moderate to even strong.

Beyond the vicinity of the epicenter, the tremor was felt as weak shaking all over Costa Rica and significant parts of bordering Nicaragua and Panama.

Teconically, the quake was a result of the subduction of the Cocos plate under the Caribbean plate, at a rate of 75 mm per year in NE direction. Larger quakes are common in this and other subduction zones.

A much larger quake of magnitude 7.6 had occurred 8 years ago on 05 Sep 2012 occurred in the same area only 86 km to the NW.

#2: 5.6 quake: Peru-Ecuador Border Region, 25 Aug 2020 05h1846 reports

A moderate 5.5 quake hit Peru’s northern Piura region at 00:18 local time today. The epicenter was located 38 kilometers northwest of Máncora town in the Talara province and had a depth of 45 km, according to Peru’s Geophysical Institute.
The quake was felt widely in northern Peru and southern Ecuador, in up to approx. 250 km distance. Many people near the epicenter reported moderate shaking, windows and roofs making noises due to the vibration, things falling from walls, lamps and fans swinging etc.
Fortunately, no significant damage seems to have been caused by the quake, which is due to the combination of the quake’s moderate depth and the remoteness of the epicenter.

#3: 3.1 quake: Kalgoorlie-Boulder, WA (Australia), 25 Aug 2020 19h1518 reports
#4: 3.4 quake: Crete, Greece, 25 Aug 2020 16h375 reports
